MERCADO MUNICIPAL
 

Por iniciativa do então prefeito José Pires do Rio, começou a ser construído em 1928, um importante edifício no estilo neoclássico de mais de 22 mil metros quadrados, requintado acabamento e coleção de belos vitrais , que demorou quatro anos para ser concluído e custou dez mil contos de réis. Esse edifício, era o Mercado Municipal de São Paulo.
Nessa época, o Mercado não tinha perspectivas de sucesso, devido a falta de meios de transporte na região. Nessa época, surgiram os bondes "cara-de-pau", exclusivo dos comerciantes e suas mercadorias, bem como o "Trenzinho da Cantareira", uma composição que fazia o abastecimento do Mercado diretamente no seu interno.

Hoje, o Mercado é uma referência nacional pela diversidade de aromas, cores e sabores como os da frutas, verduras, legumes, vinhos, queijos, chocolates, carnes, peixes, frutos do mar, aves, embutidos, temperos, condimentos, e uma quantidade de produtos encontrados nos empórios, proporcionando ao cliente além de toda essa variedade, a oportunidade de provar os produtos e desfrutar do ambiente carregado de História que o prédio oferece, pois antes de ser um mercado, propriamente dito, o complexo serviu, entre 1927 e 1933 como quartel para Revolução de 32. Além disso, a arquitetura do prédio, concebida pelo conceituado escritório de Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo , é estudada por universitários e pesquisadores.

O Mercado é famosos pelo pastel de bacalhau e o sanduíche de mortadela, que já viraram referência, e agora, inaugura uma nova fase onde o cotidiano, luxo e modernidade compartilham o mesmo espaço.
