Memorial do Imigrante

   Consolidada como uma cidade plural, que abriga várias nacionalidades, São Paulo foi, a partir de 1870, o destino de muitos imigrantes que fugiam da conturbação política e econômica de seus países de origem – especialmente da Europa – que no século seguinte viveria as duas grandes guerras. O trabalho nas fazendas de café atraiu números expressivos de europeus que vinham em busca de uma vida melhor. Para recebê-los, foi inaugurada, no final do século 19, uma Hospedaria no bairro do Brás. Os imigrantes desembarcavam no porto de Santos e subiam a serra de trem até a estação onde ficava a albergaria. Para preservar essa e tantas outras histórias que vestem a formação do povo de São Paulo, foi criado em 1998 o Memorial do Imigrante.

O lugar é composto pelo Museu da Imigração, o Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação, o Núcleo Histórico dos Transportes e o Núcleo de Estudos e Tradições. Reúne os registros de todos que passaram por ali, listagens que contabilizam mais de 60 etnias. Naquela época, eram atendidas de 3 a 8 mil pessoas por dia. O acervo contém cerca de mil fotografias, livros e revistas. Documentos de 1882 a 1907, 22% do total, já foram informatizados. Se você tem sobrenome estrangeiro pode pesquisar em pouco segundos a história dos seus ancestrais. Ou ainda pedir ajuda ao grupo de especialistas que buscam as informações manualmente.

O visitante tem a oportunidade de fazer uma viagem de volta ao passado e reviver o início do século 20 nos passeios de bonde e maria-fumaça. A estação ferroviária foi recriada no local para ambientar o percurso que vai até a Rua da Mooca. Foram reconstituídos o carro-bagagem, o carro de passageiros de segunda classe, de 1900, e um carro de passageiros de primeira classe, de 1914, da antiga São Paulo Railway. Para os amantes do passado, todo dia 25 de janeiro é realizado o Encontro de Carros Antigos. O lugar contém também pátio interno, uma auditório, jardins e uma fazenda de café, onde há um pequeno cafezal e utensílios usados nas plantações. O Memorial do Imigrante é um grande tesouro municipal e nacional, pois, além de abrigar diversas nacionalidades que adotaram o Brasil como sua nova casa, guarda um pouco da história de homens e mulheres que contribuíram para transformar São Paulo numa cidade verdadeiramente cosmopolita e que tem na diversidade um de seus pontos fortes.

Memorial of the Immigrant
