Fundado em virtude de uma paixão repentina de um republicano por cavalos, o Jockey Club de São Paulo teve sua primeira corrida em 29 de outubro de 1876, no Hipódromo da Moóca, na rua Bresser. Somente mais tarde, em 25 de janeiro de 1941 foi inaugurado o atual Hipódromo da Cidade Jardim.

Formado em Direito, Rafael Aguiar Paes de Barros defendia causas extravagantes como o fim da escravidão e, em pleno regime monárquico, foi eleito Vereador pelo Partido Republicano Paulista. Com a esperança de abrandar esse gênio exaltado, seu pai, o Barão de Itú, despacha-o em uma viagem pela Europa. De lá ele acaba voltando entusiasmado com as corridas de cavalo, muito em alta na Inglaterra, e a história do Jockey Club de São Paulo tem então o seu início com o Clube de Corridas Paulistano.

Atravessando altos e baixos causados pela Abolição dos Escravos, Proclamação da República e, mais tarde, com as Revoluções de 24, 30 e 32, o Jockey Clube sofreu sucessivas suspensões de suas corridas, mas, mesmo assim, foi se firmando dentro da rotina e da história da cidade de São Paulo. Foi de lá, também que, em 28 de abril de 1912, levantou vôo o aeroplano pilotado por Edu Chaves que ia tentar pela primeira vez fazer o percurso Rio-São Paulo via aérea. Já em 1920 passa a ter a capacidade de abrigar 2.800 espectadores e, em 1923, é criado o Grande Prêmio São Paulo, até hoje uma das disputas mais importantes do turfe brasileiro.

Em 25 de Janeiro de 1941 é inaugurado, do outro lado da cidade, o novo Hipódromo de Cidade Jardim, moderno, e adequado aos novos tempos. Aloja hoje cerca de 2.000 animais puro-sangue inglês de corrida e suas cocheiras próximas ao hipódromo e mais os Centros de Treinamento espalhados pelo interior do estado acrescentam mais um contingente de outros 1.000 animais. Conta com quatro pistas, uma de grama com 2.119 metros, e outra de areia, com 1.993 metros de volta fechada, que são utilizadas para corridas oficiais. Além disso, mais duas pistas auxiliares de areia, para treinos. Apresenta espetáculos de corridas durante o dia e à noite com serviços de bar e terraço panorâmico.

Adaptando-se aos tempos modernos, hoje a Cidade Jardim é também palco para eventos como desfiles de moda, feiras e festas. Abrigou também, e com muito sucesso, o Free Jazz Concert de 1998. Com a inauguração do restaurante Charlô e de uma filial da Mercearia São Roque dentro de suas dependências, o Jockey Clube voltou a fazer parte do circuito de espaços mais badalados da capital paulistana. A nova política do clube pretende abri-lo mais ainda para eventos sociais além de contar com um projeto de instalação de um shopping center voltado principalmente para a área de lazer, com restaurantes e cinemas.
