A primeira versão da Igreja foi instalada ali em 1591, quando o cacique Tibiriçá escolheu o terreno onde seria o primeiro templo da cidade construído em taipa de pilão (parede feita de barro e palha socados estruturados em toras).

Em 1745, a "velha Sé", como era chamada, foi elevada à categoria de Catedral. Por isso, neste mesmo ano, inicia-se a edificação da segunda matriz da Sé no mesmo local da anterior. Ao lado dela, em meados do século XIII levanta-se a Igreja de São Pedro da Pedra. Em 1911, os dois templos foram demolidos para dar espaço ao alargamento da Praça da Sé e, finalmente, à versão atual da Catedral.

O monumento também teve a sua importância na vida política recente do país. Em tempos de despotismo militar, assumiu o arcebispado D. Agnelo Rossi (1964-1970), inaugurando a fase da teologia da libertação e da opção preferencial pelos pobres. Desde 1970, sobressaiu-se a figura do cardeal arcebispo D. Paulo Evaristo Arns, que dedicou todo o seu tempo e o seu esforço ao combate à ditadura militar, denunciando os crimes, as torturas e cedendo a Sé catedral para as manifestações políticas e ecumênicas pelos desaparecidos políticos e pela anistia. Mobilizou-se por ocasião dos assassinatos do jornalista Vladimir Herzog e do operário Manuel Fiel Filho.

Um dos cinco maiores templos góticos do mundo, a catedral foi reaberta em 2002, depois de três anos de reformas e voltou a ter missas diárias.Além disso, agora há visitas monitoradas aos domingos, das 12h às 13h.

One of the five bigger góticos temples of the world, the cathedral was reopened in 2002, after three years of reforms and came back to have masses diárias.Além of this, now has visits monitored to the sundays, of 12h to 13h.
